The Delta Journal N.O.S. fountain pen was produced in 2014 as a tribute to the world of journalism. The pens for sale are New Old Stock: never used, never sold, stored in the Delta warehouse since 2014. The original list price was 180 euros; availability is also limited to the remaining stock from the original production.

Only two colors remain: Black and Pompeii Red. The cartridge/converter filling system is accessible by unscrewing the rear cap, without needing to detach the barrel from the grip.

Delta Journal N.O.S. fountain pen: design and materials

The body is made of marbled Pompeii resin or black resin, both with a polished finish. The Pompeii Red color recalls the celluloid colors used by Delta for the limited edition fountain pen Pompeii Millennium, while the Black offers a classic and sober aesthetic. The chrome metal clip is attached to the cap with a pressure system; the cap also closes with a quick thread in less than a full turn, ensuring a secure seal against ink drying.

Nib and filling of the Delta Journal N.O.S. fountain pen

The steel nib is original Delta, verified and hand-tested in the factories. The decoration incorporates a stylized design found in the archaeological remains of ancient Pompeii, an element that testifies to Delta's connection with the Campania region. Available sizes cover various writing needs: ExtraFine, Fine, Medium, Broad, and Stub.

The converter is accessible by unscrewing the rear cap of the barrel, without disassembling the grip-nib unit. Consequently, refilling is simpler and reduces the risk of leaks. The pen also accepts international standard cartridges, making it compatible with inks of any brand.

The Delta Journal 2014 collection

The Journal collection included a fountain pen, rollerball, and ballpoint pen, all with the same tapered lines. The project was inspired by reporters' notebooks and journalists' field pens from the 1950s and 60s. Original production also included mottled Brown, marbled Blue, and variegated Black/White; the currently available N.O.S. pieces therefore represent the last remaining stock. Use and maintenance

To fill with the converter, unscrew the rear cap, immerse the nib in ink, and operate the plunger several times until full. Routine cleaning, on the other hand, only requires rinsing under cold running water until the water runs clear. The resin also remains shiny with a dry soft cloth; to remove fingerprints, a slightly dampened microfiber cloth is sufficient.

FAQ

What does N.O.S. mean and what warranty does it have?

The Delta Journal N.O.S. fountain pen is a pen never sold or used, produced in 2014 and kept in Delta's original warehouse. N.O.S. means New Old Stock: it is not used, but not current production either. The Delta warranty is also valid for 24 months from the date of purchase for manufacturing defects.

How does the filling system from the rear cap work?

Unscrew the rear cap of the pen body to access the converter plunger. Immerse the nib in ink and operate the plunger several times. There's no need to disassemble the barrel: consequently, this system reduces the risk of leaks during refilling and keeps your hands clean.

Which nib size should I choose for daily use?

For daily writing, Fine or Medium is recommended. ExtraFine is suitable for very small characters or agendas with narrow lines. Broad and Stub, on the other hand, are suitable for signatures, titles, or decorative calligraphy.

Can I use inks from other brands?

Yes. The system accepts international standard cartridges (Pelikan, Waterman, Kaweco, Diamine) and any bottled ink via a converter. However, it is advisable to avoid pigmented inks or inks with metallic particles that could obstruct the feed channel.

Can I take the Delta Journal on a plane?

Yes. The fountain pen can travel in the cabin if fully charged or completely empty. If half-charged, however, changes in pressure at altitude can cause leaks. It is therefore advisable to keep the pen nib-up during takeoff and landing.

N.O.S.

Delta reopened in 2023 after closing in 2017, finding some parts that it reassembled and overhauled.
The Journal was initially available in 5 colors: in addition to Pompeii red, there was solid black, a pearly blue, a mottled brown and a mixed black-beige.

The Pompeii colour recalls a famous 1996 Delta limited edition, dedicated to Pompeii, made of dark red celluloid with green-grey inserts and some fragments of white.
The Journal is made of resin, hand-turned from solid bar stock; but the composition of the fragments and colors is very similar.
