Visconti Giardino dell'Eden Fountain Pen:
Limited Edition with Scrimshaw Decoration

The Visconti Giardino dell'Eden fountain pen is a limited edition of 100 numbered pieces, decorated with the unique Scrimshaw technique of the Florentine brand. The black resin body features a hand-engraved silver design that reinterprets the iconography of the Tree of Life in Art Nouveau style, with aesthetic references to Gustav Klimt.

The decoration covers the entire barrel surface with floral motifs, volutes, and zoomorphic details. A snake hides among the foliage: finding it is part of the collecting experience.

Visconti Giardino dell'Eden Fountain Pen: Scrimshaw Technique

The Scrimshaw technique involves manual engraving on black resin followed by filling with silver liquid. This is a handcrafted process that makes each piece precious and unique. A soft cloth is sufficient for cleaning the polished resin; however, avoid solvents or alcohol that would damage the silver decoration.

Technical Specifications

The steel nib is available in three sizes: Fine, Medium, and Broad. The Fine nib is suitable for daily writing on standard paper and small calligraphy. The Medium, on the other hand, is suitable for bolder and more legible writing. The Broad is ideal for calligraphy and distinctive signatures.

The filling system accepts standard cartridges or a converter (included), with a capacity of approximately 1.2 ml of ink. The cap closes magnetically to ensure practical use and protect the nib from drying out.

Dimensions and Balance

Dimensions: 14.2 cm closed, 13.5 cm open without cap, 16.8 cm posted. Barrel diameter 1.2 cm, section 1.0 cm. Weight 28 grams. The balance is neutral: the pen can be used with the cap posted on the back or unposted, according to preference.

Production and Packaging

Produced in Florence at the Visconti factory with individual quality control. Each piece comes with a numbered ID card and is packaged in the personalized Visconti triangular box, complete with converter. 2-year international warranty against manufacturing defects. Cartridges must be purchased separately.

FAQ

How to choose the right nib for a Visconti fountain pen?

The Fine nib is suitable for 5–7 mm ruled notebooks and for small writing. It draws a thin line that does not feather on standard 80 g/m² paper. If you use wide ruled notebooks (over 8 mm) or prefer bolder writing, choose Medium. Broad is ideal, however, for calligraphy, distinctive signatures, and expressive writing.

How to fill the Visconti fountain pen and how many words can I write?

The Visconti fountain pen accepts standard cartridges or the included piston converter. With the converter: unscrew the barrel, insert the nib into an ink bottle, turn the knob counter-clockwise to draw in ink. The capacity is 1.2 ml, equivalent to approximately 8–10 A4 pages with a Fine nib. Cartridges contain 0.8 ml and should be pressed into the section after removing the converter.

Does the Scrimshaw decoration get damaged with daily use?

The silver decoration is fixed in the resin through a thermal process and withstands normal use. Avoid abrasive surfaces, alcohol or acetone, and direct impacts on the barrel. For cleaning, use a dry or slightly damp microfiber cloth. With these precautions, the decoration will maintain its original brilliance for decades.

What ink should I use for the Visconti fountain pen?

You can use any commercially available fountain pen ink, both in standard cartridges and in bottles. Avoid permanent or pigmented inks that can clog the feed; instead, prefer traditional water-based inks. If you change colors, rinse the nib with lukewarm water and let it dry for 24 hours before refilling.

What is the warranty for Visconti fountain pens?

Visconti international warranty of 2 years from the date of purchase on manufacturing defects: leaks, malfunctions of the filling mechanism, spontaneous breakage of the resin. It does not cover damage from drops, normal wear, or problems caused by unsuitable inks. For assistance, contact the retailer with the numbered ID card and proof of purchase.

Can I write with the pen posted or should I remove the cap?

The neutral balance allows both modes. Posted, it measures 16.8 cm and weighs 28 grams evenly distributed; unposted, it measures 13.5 cm and is lighter in hand. Those with large hands generally prefer the posted version; those who write for long periods, however, prefer not to post to reduce weight.

How to clean the fountain pen after a period of disuse?

If the fountain pen has been unused for more than 4 weeks with ink loaded, empty the reservoir and unscrew the section from the barrel. Immerse the nib in lukewarm water for 10 minutes, then operate the converter to circulate water through the system. Repeat until the expelled water is clear, then dry and let it dry for 24 hours before refilling.

Is the magnetic cap closure secure to prevent leaks?

The Visconti magnetic closure ensures reliable seal and practical use. The system keeps the cap firmly in place during transport and prevents the nib from drying out. For safety, always transport the pen vertically with the nib facing upwards, especially on an airplane or in conditions of temperature fluctuations.

The silver design that decorates the pen recalls the style of Klimt and his Tree of Life.
It depicts a tree—obviously an apple tree, speaking of Eden—climbing up the pen's barrel and extending onto the cap, in an intricate interplay of branches that expand into curls, spirals, leaves, and apples; like a precious embroidery that lightens the pen's sobriety. And there is also a well-hidden little snake!

The central palladium band is decorated with the Giardino Italiano logo, the anniversary dates (1996-2016) and a hint of the same curls as the main decoration.

The Scrimshaw Technique

Scrimshaw involves carving the resin with a very sharp cutter to create the decorative pattern. The cracks are then filled with ink, in this case silver, and left to dry for at least three days. Finally, the entire surface is carefully cleaned until the entire design appears. Scrimshaw was used in ancient times to decorate walking sticks, especially ivory ones, the handles of collectible knives, and rifle butts. Visconti is currently the only company in the world to use this technique.
