The central band
The central band of the silver and bronze shaft depicts Hippocrates: an ancient Greek physician, geographer, and aphorist, considered the father of medicine.
Hippocrates introduced the innovative concept that a person's illness and health depended on specific human circumstances, not on superior divine intervention; he invented the medical record, theorized the need to rationally observe patients, taking notes and transcribing their appearance and symptoms, and introduced, for the first time, the concepts of diagnosis and prognosis.

Asklepios was the Greek god of medicine (Aesculapius to the Romans).
The Rod of Asclepius symbolizes the healing arts, combining the serpent – which, by shedding its skin, symbolizes rebirth and fertility – with the rod, a simple instrument.
