The very important and noble art of papermaking on the Amalfi Coast has a long and glorious tradition, dating back to the Middle Ages when the process, learned from the Arabs, became part of local economic activities.
The oldest filigree symbol on the Amalfi Coast – the anchor – dates back to 1376. The Antica Cartiera Amalfitana is located in the old Fresco di Pucara Paper Mill in Tramonti, and uses centuries-old equipment that has been carefully restored: a paddle wheel, mills for pulping cotton rags, a wooden drying rack with ventilation holes in the walls for air-drying the paper, and a hydraulically powered hammer for smoothing the paper. The ivory-colored paper is delicately personalized with the watermark "cartiera amalfitana" and the anchor symbol.
The handmade paper is available in packs of 10 sheets and 10 envelopes, sealed and tied with string and sealing wax.
