Prisoners Round: when a pen tells the story of a painting

Vincent van Gogh painted Prisoners Exercising in 1890, while admitted to the psychiatric hospital in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, taking inspiration from an engraving by Gustave Doré. Anonymous figures walking in circles, surrounded by towering walls: a work that speaks of isolation and denied freedom, among the artist's most psychologically intense paintings.
