quality, design, attention to detail

The Pininfarina Penna Piuma Leonardo was created to celebrate the 500th anniversary of the Renaissance genius's death, with an evaporated pearwood body and a shape inspired by the quill pens of his manuscripts. Leonardo's signature is engraved on the back in mirror writing: readable in a mirror, just like his original notes.
Piuma is available with an Ethergraf® tip — a writing system that uses oxidation, no ink, no refills, and never runs out. The stroke is clean and light, permanent on paper. It is also available in a classic ballpoint version with a standard refill.

Materials and construction
The body of the Pininfarina Piuma is made from evaporated pearwood, a material processed to reduce residual moisture and stabilize its shape over time. Each piece has its own natural wood grain, so no two pieces are identical.
The design is by Pininfarina, the Italian studio known for designing shapes in the automotive and industrial sectors. Furthermore, the steel pen holder base included in the package is designed to display the pen vertically on the desk.
The Ethergraf® tip
Ethergraf® is a special metal alloy tip that writes by oxidation on the paper surface, without depositing ink or graphite. The mark produced is long-lasting. In particular, the tip does not wear out under normal use conditions and does not require replacement.
Pininfarina also offers the same pen with a traditional ballpoint refill, for those who prefer an inked stroke.
The reference to Leonardo da Vinci
The shape of the Piuma evokes the quill pen, a writing instrument of the Renaissance, and Leonardo da Vinci's ornithological studies. The artist's signature is reproduced on the pen body in mirror writing, readable only when reflected in a mirror. This is the same technique Leonardo used in his manuscripts.
The Pininfarina Penna Piuma Leonardo 500th anniversary is a tribute to Leonardo da Vinci, who died in Amboise on May 2, 1519.
Compatibility and use
The Ethergraf® version is suitable for common paper, sketch paper, and notebooks. Unlike traditional tips, it does not work on plasticized or coated surfaces.
The ballpoint version uses standard refills compatible with the most common formats.
FAQ
Does the Ethergraf tip really write without ink?
Yes. Ethergraf® writes by oxidation: the metal alloy tip leaves a permanent mark on paper without depositing ink, graphite, or pigments. It does not require refills and does not run out under normal use.
What surfaces does the Ethergraf tip work on?
It works on common paper, drawing paper, and notebooks with an uncoated surface. However, it is not suitable for plasticized, glossy, or waterproof-coated paper.
Is Pininfarina Piuma also available as a ballpoint pen?
Yes. In addition to the version with an Ethergraf® tip, Pininfarina offers the Piuma with a classic ballpoint tip and a replaceable refill.
What does it mean that Leonardo's signature is in mirror writing?
Leonardo da Vinci's signature is engraved on the pen body so that it is only readable when reflected in a mirror — the same technique Leonardo used in his handwritten notes, probably to protect the content or for reasons related to his left-handedness.
What does the Pininfarina Piuma package include?
The package includes the Piuma pen and a steel pen holder base, designed to display the pen vertically on the desk.
Is Pininfarina Piuma suitable as a gift?
The Piuma is a designer pen with a precise narrative history, made of crafted wood and featuring an unusual writing system. It is suitable as a gift for design, writing, art history enthusiasts, or for those looking for an extraordinary desk object.
The writing of the Ethergraf-tipped pen is not intended for daily use such as taking work notes or signing documents. It is a tool that prefers a slow gesture to a quick flow, closer to a sketch, to an evocative annotation, to a mark that tells an idea instead of filling a page. A design object that lives on the desk as a silent companion and not as a substitute for traditional pens.
The Ethergraf® tip
The ETHERGRAF® tip allows you to write without using ink or graphite, simply by exploiting the oxidation of the paper.
It microscopically "scratches" the paper, oxidizing it and leaving a light but indelible mark.
Thanks to its porosity, ordinary paper, i.e. untreated cellulose paper (made from plant fibres bonded together through a process called "felting"), is a material that reacts perfectly to the passage of the metal tip.
