The frame is made of cellulose acetate, crafted using the same technique used in the 1950s; the raw cotton material undergoes numerous processing stages until it transforms into a striped sheet, which is then shaped, sanded, and cut into a cylinder with diamond tools.
The Souverän was also made entirely black, in diamond-treated and polished fine resin, like the cap and tips; with a semi-transparent window for ink inspection.

The large nib, in 18 Kt gold, two-tone, with rhodium-plated decoration, is hand-tested for each pen.
All Souverän 1000 pens have a differential piston filling system: a mechanism introduced by Pelikan in 1929, which rotates the piston inside the fountain pen faster than the end of the barrel, thanks to two different threads.
The transparent green window is only present in the all-black model.
